The Corkscrew Museum

Bringing together more than 1,200 pieces from around the world from the 17th century to the present day, the Corkscrew Museum fascinates. Visitors are invited to rediscover this everyday object full of surprises, during a journey through the history of wine and its definitely unusual accessories...

15 grape varieties delight in the richness of these lands. At the forefront of the reds, Syrah is the soul of the Domaine's wines, drawing its strength from the cool nights and the energy of the Luberon subsoils. Grenache noir, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot complement it wonderfully depending on the blends and vintages.

On the white side, Roussanne leads the dance, often accompanied by Marsanne, Grenache blanc, Vermentino and Clairette. Viognier and Chardonnay add their touch to this beautiful palette. In order to guarantee the optimal quality of each grape variety, the vine is trained and its yield limited by various tasks such as short pruning, rigorous disbudding, and sometimes even green harvesting.

The origins of the corkscrew

The Corkscrew Museum traces the entire evolution and diversity of this seemingly simple, yet surprising tool. The first corkscrews appeared around the middle of the 17th century, probably across the Channel: the English began to age their wines in glass bottles, rather than barrels. While the shape of these bottles changed, their necks became narrower, requiring the insertion of compressed corks. An "extractor" or "corkscrew" therefore proved indispensable.

Until the Industrial Revolution, these were generally unique pieces, shaped and personalized by hand by goldsmiths or blacksmiths. Then, with the rise of machine tools, corkscrews were endlessly reinvented, between practicality, efficiency and creativity: this fascinating saga makes the heart of the museum beat.
